Settling In

We finally moved from the treachery that is Daly Street Lofts/Telephone Company Lofts. In the four weeks that we've been moved, we have pretty much settled... except for a couple of boxes, we are unpacked and have everything in its place.

We've used our fireplace, hung our draperies, framed photos, and set-up our guest room. We have an office for working, a room for working out, and a big living room where we can relax on our sofa, lie around, and relax. We have a 10-foot-long table on our covered patio and a garage to store things like cars, cleaning supplies, washer and dryer, and tools. We have empty cabinets that haven't been filled with unneeded kitchen gadgets or extraneous clothing or other useless trappings. It is so nice to have room to move and not feel claustrophobic or unable to separate workspace from living space. (The loft wasn't small, but we never got to experience it as a home--only as a construction zone managed by a buffoon--so we are comparing our house to our last real home, a one-bedroom, 650-square-foot apartment.)

We hung our (big) art collection, and everything works peculiarly well here. I am so happy that Dan and I decided years ago only to buy original art (instead of prints), because it makes the collection so much nicer. For a spot blank in the living room, we are going to feature blow-ups of some of my photography (already have the frames), and in the office, we still need to frame some pieces Dan's been wanting to hang for a few years. We need to add some plants--oh, and we're trying to grow a couple of avocado trees--and plant a small garden of herbs and simple, non-invasive vegetables. We still need chairs for the outside table, and we need new dining chairs.

So, there's a to-do list, but at least it's no longer comprised of things like "give another to-do list to landlord" or "re-pack AGAIN" or "check with LA Department of Consumer Affairs about non-return of security deposit." It's all fun stuff.
