Site Launch: AfterWicked.com

Mara Sandroff is a high school senior who acts, sings... and writes. (How fitting that she attends a school for gifted and talented students.) She contacted me a few weeks ago about building a site to showcase her writing, specifically fan fiction she has created around the Broadway musical Wicked. Her two-volume The If Duology follows the citizens of Oz and the main characters of Wicked as they recover from the trauma they endured in the play.I'm not often approached by teenaged clients, but Mara has proven to be a professional client despite her age: While developing the After Wicked logo...

Spring is in the Air...

Even though we have a couple of months of winter left, the weather has made it feel like spring in these parts. Each year around this time (weather permitting), I get the itch to do spring cleaning, organize, and tidy up every part of my life and business to make way for a lazy, lounge-y summer. The past few months have been filled with so many great experiences and new beginnings: I have started a couple of side ventures, gone on a few trips with family and with friends, and worked on some fun projects with existing and new clients...

I recently took a class at Writing Pad, which offers seminars and courses for all kinds of writing in a hip pad with gourmet treats. The owner, Marilyn, generously offers free writing prompts at her blog, which is a goldmine for writers who want to practice, practice, practice but don't always know where to start or hit a spot of writer's block. Here are a few additional online resources for idea inspiration: Brian Stokes' Random Logline Generator: Press a button to get a quick story synopsis with characters and plot.  Wikipedia:Random: Follow the link in the left column of Wikpedia to...

Online Language Evolution

im @ coffee w/1 of my BFFs discussing new media + its effect on language. its srsly interesting 2 me... While part of me is bothered by the butchery of "proper" English, another part knows that this is a natural element of communication throughout history; however, it's never happened at such a rapid rate. Traditionalists may complain that the younger generations are missing out on something important when they use wrong words, misspell, or populate their texts with weird slang, but the ultimate goal is communication--so if their words are understood, it could be argued that they've simply taken a...

April's Blog-a-Day Month

My sweetie-pie friend Sophia has participated in NaNoWrimo (National Novel Writing Month - November), and this year, I want to do it. I registered, and within a couple of weeks, I had received tons of emails from the site about a newly launched side venture, ScriptFrenzy (30 Days, 300 Pages of a Screenplay - April). I was interested for about two days (and even hit up Sophia to ride along), when I realized that I am not a screenwriter and probably have no business trying to conjure a script. Fortunately, Sophia offered up a better suggestion: Let's make April Blog-a-Day...

Finding Time to Blog is Hard...

I always have an intention to post daily entries on my blog, but invariably, I find having staying power the hardest part. Generally, I start out strong, then start to lag, until--the next thing I know--it's been a monthful of nothing. I definitely make mental notes (and some written notes) when a topic arises, so I can put it on the back burner of my brain and let it simmer. Even if I think about what I want to post, though, the time it takes to sit down (and avoid distraction), then type and edit, a post is at least...

Some Writing in Some Publication*

I'm not a poet. But in 2007, I spontaneously wrote a poem in response to a challenge posed by my friend Didi Menendez, publisher of MiPOesias, OCHO, and other poetry-related stuff. Anyway, El Culo de Bettie is published in the January/February 2008 All Things Girl. Themed "Love & Lust," the issue features lovely, lusty cover girl Deborah Harry. *My lame title is more about how this is not me bragging about how great I am than it is an indication of the quality of All Things Girl. The publication features cool writing, art, interviews, and cover stories by females... for...
